Root of Angelica dahurica (Fisch. ex Hoffm.)
Benth.et Hook. f. and A. dahurica (Fisch.ex Hoffm.) Benth. et Hook.f.
var. forrnosana (Boiss.) Shan et Yuan, family Umbelliferae.
Characteristics
Root conical, with basal scar of the stem at the top and large longitudinal
long protruded lenticels scattered on the surface. Cross section
white and powdery, with brown oil spots, cambium rounded. Aromatic
in odour. Taiwan Angelica square at the upper part of the root,
lenticels arranged in four longitudinal rows, square cambium present
at the upper part. Acrid in taste, warm in nature, and attributive
to lung and stomach channels.
Indication
I. Expel wind evil and induce sweating to expel the exogenous evils
from the body surface, clear the nasal passage and alleviate pain:
For common cold of wind-cold type with stuffy nose and headache;
sinusitis and toothache.
2. Relieve carbuncle and drain pus: For the initial stage of carbuncle.
3. Deprive the evil dampness from the middle-jiao: For leukorrhagia
of cold dampness type and prurigo of wind dampness type.
Pharmacological
Action
1. Byak-angelicin contained in its root can dilate the coronary
arteries.
2. Stimulating the respiratory center, vasomotor center and nervus
vagus.
3. Its decoction exerts bacteriostatic effect.
4. Imperatorin, another active component, is effective for psoriasis.
Administration
Decoction: 3-10g.

Root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, family Labiatae.
Characteristics
Root irregularly conical, sometimes twisted, 8-25 cm long, 1-3 cm
in
diameter, surface deep yellow or brown, the upper part coarse and
with reticular fibrous bundles and twisted vertical striae, the
lower part with more straightly vertical striac and scattered with
a few fme root scars. Section yellow, red-brown at the center, and
the old ones showing brown-dark, rotten or hollowed. Prepared as
small pieces. Bitter in taste, cold in nature, and attributive to
lung, gallbladder and large intestine channels.
Indication
1. Clear away heat and deprive dampness from the middlejiao: For
diarrhea, dysentery and jaundice of dampness type, dampnes~heat
diseases in summer, stranguria of heat type, and prurigo of dampnes~heat
type. Recently, also used for acute biliary infection.
2. Purge the sthenic fire and detoxify: For dyspneic cough due to
lungheat, pharyngitis, skin infection, bum, and seasonal febrile
disease. Recently baicalin is used for epidemic B encephalitis.
3. Purge the sthenic fire to stop bleeding: For heat-syndrome with
hematemesis, hemoptysis, hemafecia or epistaxis.
4. Clear away heat to prevent miscarriage: For excessive fetal movement
due to heat-syndrome in pregnancy, usually used together with Rhizoma
Atractylodis Macrocephakie.
5. Lower the blood pressure: For hypertension, especially those
with flushed face, restlessness and red tongue with yellow coating.
Pharmacological Action
1. Possessing a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic and virustatic effect.
2. Anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory.
3. Intravenous injection or oral administration of its decoction
can lower typhoid vaccine-induced fever in rabbits.
4. Hypotensive.
5. Acting as a chologogue and relaxing the spasms of small intestine.
Administration Decoction: 3-9g.
Tablet (containing baicalin 250mg): 2-3 tablets tid.
Ampoule (containing baicalin 6Omg in 2 ml): 1-2 ampoules IM 1-2
times daily, or 8-20 ml in 10% glucose 500 ml IV for drips daily.
Rhizoma
Coptidis

Rhizome of Coptis chinensis Franch. and C. deltoidea C. Y. Cheng
et Hsiao, family Ranuncutaceae.
Characteristics
Rhizome branching at the base with the branches curved up-wards,
like an inverted chicken claw. A single rhizome 3-6 cm long, 0.3-0.8
cm in
diameter; surface grey-yellow, coarse, nodes dense, protruding,
with relic spiny fibrous roots, sometimes with internodes, long
and smooth; brown scale leaves and leaf bases often remaining at
the top of the rhizome. Cortex of the section reddish, xylem bright
yellow, vascular bundles radial, pith sometime hollowed. The rhizome
of C deltoidea usually single, few of branches, with longer internodes.
Bitter in taste, cold in nature, and attributive to heart, liver,
stomach and large intestine channels.
Indication
1. Clear away heat and deprive dampness from the middle-jiao: For
diarrhea, dysentery and jaundice of daiiipness-heat type, stranguria
of heat type, dampness-heat syndrome involving the gastrointestine
with abdominal fullness, nausea, vomiting, red tongue with yellowish
greasy coating.
2. Purge the sthenic fire and clear away toxic material: For various
types of intense heat-syndrome, such as seasonal febrile diseases,
pestilence, carbuncle, furunculosis complicated by septicemia, sorethroat,
conjunctivitis, burn, etc. Applicable to cases with high fever,
extreme thirst, restlessness, red tongue, yellow fur, rapid pulse,
delirium and coma
3. Clear away heart-fire and relieve vexation: For sthenic heart-fire
syndrome with fever, chest upset and insomnia.
4. Purge sthenic fire to stop bleeding: For heat-syndrome with hemitemesis,
hemoptysis, epistaxis, hemafecia, or hematuria, usually used together
with Radix Scutellariae, Fructus Gardeniae and Radix et Rhizoma

Pharmacological Action
Its chief component is berberine.
1. Possessing broad-spectrum antibacterial and antiprotozoal effects.
2. Intravenous injection or oral administration of berberine exerts
a hypotensive effect on experimental animals.
3. Small dosage of berberine enhances the action of acetylcholine
on animals' hearts in vitro, while large dosage counteracts it.
4. Relaxmg the smooth muscles of blood vessels and stimulating those
of uterus, urinary bladder, bronchus and gastrointestines.
5. Promoting bile secretion.
6. Berberine inhibits the cellular growth of ascitic cancer and
lymphoma.
Administration Decoction: 3-9g. Tablet (berberine 0. l-0.2g): tid
or qid.
